Membership
Who can join Copper?
Anyone who lives, works, worships or studies in San Francisco, plus their family members.
What does it cost to join?
A one-time $5 deposit into a membership savings account. That $5 is your share of ownership.
Who runs the credit union?
A volunteer board of directors elected by members. Every member gets one vote, whatever their balance.
Is my money insured?
Yes. Deposits are federally insured by NCUA up to $250,000 per member.
Checking
How long does opening an account take?
About six minutes online. You will need a government ID and your Social Security number. Opening an account does not affect your credit score.
When does my direct deposit arrive?
As soon as your employer sends the payment file, which is usually one to two days before your scheduled payday. Timing depends on your employer.
Is there really no monthly fee?
Yes. Everyday Checking has no monthly fee and no minimum balance, ever.
Can I switch my direct deposit from another bank?
Yes. Our switch tool finds your employer and moves your deposit for you. Most switches finish within one pay cycle.
Savings
How is my savings dividend paid?
Dividends compound daily and are paid into your account monthly. The rate on our rates page is the annual percentage yield (APY).
Can I take money out whenever I want?
Yes. High-Yield Savings and Money Market have no withdrawal fees. Certificates pay more because the money stays put until the term ends.
Is there a minimum balance?
No. You can open High-Yield Savings with any amount, and it earns from the first dollar.
Is my savings insured?
Yes. Deposits are federally insured by NCUA up to $250,000 per member.
Retirement
Should I choose a Traditional or a Roth IRA?
It depends on whether you would rather pay tax now or later. A banker can walk you through both, but we can't give tax advice; a tax professional can.
Can I move an IRA I already have to Copper?
Yes. We can transfer an IRA from another institution for you. Bring a recent statement to any mint or start it with Member Services.
What does my IRA earn?
Your IRA can hold savings or certificates, and earns the same rates as the accounts it holds. Today's rates are on our rates page.
Loans
Will checking my rate affect my credit?
Pre-approval uses a soft credit check, which does not affect your score. A full application uses a hard inquiry.
Do I need to be a member first?
You can apply and join at the same time. Membership is open to anyone who lives, works or studies in San Francisco.
Can I pay my loan off early?
Yes. None of our loans have prepayment penalties.
What documents will I need?
Usually a recent pay stub, a government ID, and for auto loans the purchase agreement or vehicle details.
Auto loans
How long does a pre-approval last?
Sixty days, so you can shop without rushing. Your rate is held as long as you buy within that time.
Can I buy from a private seller?
Yes. We finance private-party sales too, and we can help with the title paperwork.
Will refinancing save me money?
Often, if your current rate is higher than ours or your credit has improved since you bought. The calculator on this page shows the difference.
Personal loans
How fast will I get the money?
Most personal loans are decided the same business day, and the funds can be in your Copper account as soon as the next business day.
What can I use a personal loan for?
Almost anything: paying down cards, a repair, a move, a wedding. We don't need to know the details.
Are there fees?
No origination fee and no prepayment penalty. You pay the interest, and that's it.
Home loans
How much do I need for a down payment?
Down payments start at 5% for qualified buyers. A banker can walk you through what fits your budget.
Do you lend on condos and TICs?
Yes. Our underwriters work in San Francisco, so condos and tenancy-in-common properties are routine for us.
How long can I lock my rate?
Up to 60 days, so you can close without worrying about the market moving.
Loan calculator
How is the payment calculated?
We use a standard amortization formula: the amount financed, divided over the number of months, with interest charged on the remaining balance each month.
What rate should I use?
Start with our current rate for your term on the rates page. If your credit score is below 680, add 1–3%.
Does a bigger down payment help?
Yes. It lowers the amount financed, the monthly payment and the total interest you pay.
Cards
How do I lock my card?
Open the app, tap the card, then tap Lock. Unlock it the same way. Locking stops new purchases but lets recurring payments through.
How fast can I get a replacement?
Walk into any mint and we print a new card while you wait. By mail it takes 5–7 business days.
How do I report fraud?
Call (415) 555-0199 any time. We will lock your card, review the charges and issue provisional credit within 10 business days.
Online banking
How do I reset my password?
Choose Forgot password on the sign-in screen. We will text a code to the phone number on file.
Can I pay bills online?
Yes. Bill pay is free and you can schedule one-time or recurring payments.
Mobile app
How do I deposit a check?
Tap Deposit, photograph the front and back, and enter the amount. Most deposits are available the next business day.
Is the app secure?
The app uses device-level encryption and Face ID or fingerprint sign-in. We never ask for your password by text or email.
